Your Driving Licence Is Only Part of the Story
Planning to become a professional driving instructor? Before choosing a course, there is one important distinction to understand.
The TLI41225 Certificate IV in Motor Vehicle Driver Training does not have formal entry requirements on the national training register. You do not need to already hold a teaching qualification or have worked as an instructor.
But that does not mean completing the qualification automatically allows you to teach professionally.
Your location matters. Driving instructor licensing and accreditation are managed at the state and territory level. The requirements you face can therefore depend on where you intend to work.
For example, someone planning to become an instructor in NSW may need to meet requirements related to their licence, driving history, suitability, medical fitness and other checks. Other states and territories have their own processes.
This is why checking the complete pathway before starting training can save confusion later. The qualification may be nationally recognised, but the rules for working as an instructor are not identical everywhere.
